Yah, that describes what I have been up to in the past few days. I have been meaning to play with OpenBox. Finally, this week, I broke down and acutally installed OpenBox via Synaptic. Since then, it's been download, un-tar, compile and install little utilities and stuff. When I was not downloading, I was busy trolling through config files, tinkering with xml and otherwise learning a lot about my system. Overall, that is a good thing.
What has resulted is a lightweight (unless I use some Gnome or KDE app) and quite powerful desktop that actually looks pretty good (IMHO). It's taken a bit of work as some apps had to be added in some fashion (such as a shut down script. Hello Python!) however I have just about all the the stuff I used in a typical Gnome desktop, just not the heavy dependencies.
Already, I am getting quite used to the OpenBox way of doing things. I had to load GNOME a couple of days ago for one of my housemates. The first thing I tried to do was right click to get my OpenBox menu (which was not there of course). Overall, Openbox is much easier to theme than Metacity (the default Gnome window manager) though it's graphic effects are not "as fancy". However when it comes to functionality, OpenBox blows Metacity away. Nor do I need the full Gnome desktop to do what I want.
I may upload my Openbox theme in the future as it's close to done (other than a bit of tinkering). My GTK theme is further away as there is some nagging issues that need to be addressed (though they are not critical).

Je Suis Charlie Hebdo
I think the title says it all. I know I am a bit behind on this one (technical issues, not laziness are the cause of that) however I feel I need to ad my voice.
The cartoonists, editors, writers and all the others who contributed to Charlie Hebdo had more courage than just about any I know of. They are equal of Medal of Honor (and the equivalents around the world) recipients, journalists in war zones like Syria and Iraq, the various folks who fought and died for civil rights for all. For them, I raise my digital pen into the air.
Merci
Shh, you blink...
and the time flies by. Holy $%&@, another year has flown by. Then again, I have been very busy this year. It has not been dull either. I got stuff in the pipeline and some goals to meet. Anyway, that's all for now.
I have returned...
After a long absence, I have finally returned (mostly) to the Internet and DevArt. While I have been online before via public 'net terminals, I finally got my hands on a PC with WiFi. Sure it's an old eePC and I have to share it with my housemates, however I can now create, upload and otherwise do want I want/need to do.
My PC: 2000 - 2012 RIP
Sometimes you're the truck and sometimes you're the gopher trying to cross the Interstate. Last Friday, it was gopher time for me.
I had been trying to revive my PC. Note that past tense as I was mostly successful (as noted in my last Journal entry), however last Friday, my efforts got dealt a fatal blow. My poor old video card (a now ancient Radeon 9200 card) died. Since the PC is so old (the last major rebuild was in 2004) and things have advanced since then (AGP which was my old card's interface got replaced by PCI-e), finding a replacement card is just about impossible. It's simply not worth the time to be trolling the web
